A doctor shows the dilation of small blood vessels of the skin on the leg.

Diminish the appearance of veins with this minimally invasive procedure.

When blood collects in the veins due to increased blood pressure or venous damage, spider veins or varicose veins can form. These veins are most commonly seen in the legs. While they can pose cosmetic problems, these can also be accompanied by discomfort. Varicose veins may be painful, discolored, or cause itching or cramping in the legs.

To find relief from varicose and spider veins, choose sclerotherapy treatments from your experts at the Leg & Vein Center

How It Works

During a 30-45 minute appointment, your specialist will inject sclerosing agents into the treatment area. These agents are made of saline solutions, sodium tetradecyl, or other solutions that seal off blood flow in the spider or varicose vein. This causes blood flow to be redirected, eventually allowing these veins to be reabsorbed into the body.

This procedure requires virtually no downtime for recovery. Your specialist may recommend wearing compression stockings, avoiding excess heat on the legs for the first few days following the treatment, and steering clear of certain medications.

Treatment Areas

Varicose veins and spider veins can affect multiple areas of the body. These red, blue, or purple veins may develop close to the surface of the skin or appear swollen and bulging. Sclerotherapy can be used in multiple treatment areas including:

  • The legs
  • The feet and ankles
  • And more

Expected Results

Especially large veins may require up to four sessions of injections to diminish in appearance. Small varicose or spider veins may fade in as little as three weeks, while larger veins take as many as four to six months to reach optimal results.

Following your procedure, you may experience some discomfort, swelling, or discoloration of the injection site, but these symptoms should subside within a few days of the appointment. If you experience any lasting pain from your treatment, consult with your specialists as soon as possible.

Am I a Candidate?

Sclerotherapy is commonly performed on male and female patients between the ages of 30 and 60 years old. Those who are interested in diminishing spider veins for cosmetic purposes are valid candidates for the treatment. And, patients with painful, itching, or bulging varicose veins should also consult with their physician about sclerotherapy.

Tell your doctor if you have recently given birth or are currently pregnant or breastfeeding as these patients are not prime candidates for sclerotherapy. During a consultation with a vascular specialist from the Leg & Vein Center, our professionals will help determine if sclerotherapy is the right treatment for you.
